Review of the first LMI Baritone - April 2007:
Build Quality & Design
Instrument looks great. Gold valve caps & water keys are a nice touch.
Feels & looks solid and well made and finally a water key on the 3rd valve
slide - thank you!
My only slight reservation would be that that 3rd valve water key maybe make
the instrument slightly uncomfortable to hold - dependant on each individual
and how they naturally hold the instrument.
Another major plus is that someone has finally made a baritone with quiet
valves!
Overall 23/25
Intonation
Very similar intonation to the Besson however slightly better in my opinion.
As usual the 2/3 combination is flat on the Ab, and the 1/2 combination is
sharp on the A's. The top F on 1st is also a little sharp but overall I was
pleasantly surprised at how good the intonation was.
Overall 22.5/25
Ease of Blowing/Tonal Quality
I found this instrument remarkably easy to blow - even straight 'off the shelf''
- or in this case off the plane!
I was impressed with how easy it felt through the entire range, the low regiser
(including pedals) is particularly good, and the sometimes problematic upper
register also seemed pretty trouble free and easy - especially good was the
top D.
The LMI has a lovely warm, round baritone sound and it takes a hell of a lot
of volume before you can make it sound even remotely nasty!
Overall 24.5/25
Overall Performance & Value for Money
Overall I was very impressed with the LMI RO55 and it seems to be competitively
priced, even in some cases slightly cheaper than it's competitors. Valves
seem nice & quiet, and well manufactured, and the whole instrument has
a 'quality' feel.
I would highly recommend this instrument and hope to be moving to one myself
very soon!
24/25
Overall comments - this is the best baritone I have played in a long time.
Not that the others weren't good but this is better!
Overall - 94/100
